Everlasting Summer was a song written by James House and published in the London Morning Post newspaper in September 1826. The song tells of an abasing labouring man who, despite hard times, finds peace and fulfilment in his short-lived love for a girl he has never seen. In fact, the song was written about an Irish maidservant named Mary whose father had left, taking Mary with him. Since Mary has no other means of support, the dreamy new bride is forced to continue her old life as a servant at her husband's cottage. She becomes pregnant during her time there, but when her husband expresses concern over the child's paternity (not knowing that it's his own child) she is forced to leave him after discovering that he might also be unfaithful. Everlasting Summer—with its laments describing "the secret woes of [the working]man" —was part of a trend that saw the expansion of lessons into areas hitherto occupied by other forms of culture], such as theatre and poetry…
